Mathius (Matt) Johnson, Head Coach
Matt Johnson has been named head coach of Toledo Villa FC for the 2020 season, bringing an extensive background of coaching at the professional, college and club levels.
Johnson currently serves as the head men’s soccer coach at Lourdes University as well as coach for Michigan Wolves-Hawks, Mary Grove College, and Detroit Ignition. Under his coaching, Marygrove College qualified for the WHAC playoffs every year.
Johnson brings 15+ years of playing experience with the Major Indoor Soccer League, Eastern Soccer Indoor League and Horizon League NCAA D1. In 2010, Johnson obtained is US Soccer Federation B License.
Johnson graduated from the Green Bay, WI campus of University of Wisconsin with a B.A. in Political Science, minoring in Social Change and Development.
Nick Smith, Associate Head Coach
A Lucas County native, Nick Smith was named to the Toledo Villa FC coaching staff in December 2019 for the 2020 season. In addition to his role with Villa, Smith currently serves as an assistant coach at Lourdes University in Sylvania, Ohio. Prior to his time at Lourdes, Smith has worked in two NCAA Division II programs and served as an assistant with the men’s programs at Chaminade University in Honolulu and the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut.
Smith also coached numerous club teams in Hawaii, Southern California, and Connecticut including South Central Premier (now Beachside Soccer Club) who competes in the Development Academy setup. Throughout his club coaching exploits, Smith has helped place numerous athletes into college programs and two players into youth national teams.
As a player, Smith competed in the Premier Development League – now rebranded USL League Two – with the Indiana Invaders. He also played college soccer at the University of Bridgeport and Chaminade University, being named captain of both programs. He remains the most recent Chaminade player to be placed on the First Team All-PACWEST team, an award he earned in 2008 as a sophomore before transferring to Bridgeport. Prior to his college playing days, Smith played for area clubs Pacesetter Soccer Club and the Toledo Celtics and is a graduate from Anthony Wayne High School.
Smith is a 2011 graduate of the University of Bridgeport, with dual B.A. degrees in International Political Economy and Diplomacy and Social Science. Additionally, Smith graduated with a J.D. degree from the University of California-Hastings College of the Law in 2016.

Starting in 2019, Toledo Villa FC has also added Justin Guy to their front office, as Director of Operations. His degree in Sport Administration as well as his experience with soccer around NWO is a great correlation with the Villa club. Justin played for many local clubs in his youth, as well as being a National Finalist for the 2005 National ODP team. Justin graduated from the University of Toledo before returning to his alma Mater, Oregon Clay High School, to coach Boys Varsity Soccer for four years. Now, Justin is looking to help grow the sport at the professional level here in Toledo.
