Toledo, OH—The Toledo Villa Men were fighting for their playoff lives on Saturday July 15th against Oakland County FC. The fight showed in spades, as the boys emerged victorious by a spread of 5-1.
After a feeling out period with very few chances for either team, the game opened up with a huge 5-minute spell from the lads in Red. Between the 24th and 29th minute the Oakland goal was peppered with 5 or 6 clear chances. Jeff Kelly-Rosales opened up the scoring, slamming home a shot following a give-and-go with Tyler Biggs in the 24th minute. Seconds later, Biggs looked to get on the sheet by himself with a pretty chip over the Oakland keeper Zach Walker, but the referee’s flag waved for offside. Another minute passed and Kelly-Rosales was on the giving end of a pass that Renan Troccoli got some part of his leg to propelling the ball into an empty net for the two nil lead. Robert Miller III rounded out the spell when he smashed a ball just wide of the net in the 29th minute. Toledo continued the pressure throughout the half but the whistle blew and the two nil score line held at the half.
Nearly 500 wonderful fans were on hand to celebrate Pacesetter night for the club’s last home game, and the second half picked up right where the first left off. After only five minutes, Brad Macomber picked out his Bowling Green State University teammate Robert Miller III with a great bending ball. Miller took one touch to settle the cross then calmly pushed it under the onrushing Walker to net the game’s third goal (Miller’s 4th league goal of the season). Later, Miller nearly joined the assist column as well when he drilled a ball into the path of Hamid Shariff, but his back heel attempt didn’t have enough juice on it and was saved easily. These two wouldn’t be denied their stats though, and in the 60th minute Miller nodded a ball back across the face of goal and Shariff plucked it out of mid air sending it perfectly into the bottom corner of the Oakland goal. The final two goals came within seconds of each other as Troccoli tucked home his second brace in two games blasting in a rebounded shot. On the other end, Oakland’s Azaad Liadi turned brilliantly and fired one in off the post to break the clean sheet for keeper Billy Spink. The second goal for Troccoli puts him level with Miller for team lead in league goals at 4.
The Villa men now face another must win match against Muskegon Risers who they drew with 2-2 in the home opener. Everything for both teams will be on the line as whoever wins that match will secure a spot in the playoffs. That match will be played in Muskegon on July 22nd at 6:00PM.
